Mousecapades

Continuing the saga of my (hitherto failed) attempts to catch the mouse (or mice) that has (have) invaded our home...

After numerous cases of the trap being sprung, bait being taken and no mouse caught the score was something like Mouse 10 - Ed 0.

But this morning it became Mouse 10 - Ed 1.
Yep, this morning I finally caught our first mouse.

And, as planned, I took it some distance from the house and let it out.

See that nose sticking out? That's the mouse about to make his escape.

And that brown blur is him on his way.

Whether that was the only mouse remains to be seen...

Usually there are more then one. So you should probably still set the trap. And what did you use for bait??
But yeah for finally having a victory over the little critter.

Where there's one, there's many. I guarantee.

My cat caught a mouse the other day, so I'm sure I have more.

You are a better person than I, Ed.

I HATE mice...and if they invade my home, I am very glad to kill as many as I can.

They wee all over everything, you know. I still can't help but think them rather cute.

Willing to bet you have several, and you may want a
cat

Yea for the victory!

I hope he isn't on his way back to the family still living in your house ;)

Rosie, the traps come ready baited with a sort of cheesy smear which works well to attract them - the problem is that they can somehow get in and out of the traps without getting caught. So I will have to get a different type of trap, because despite the one success they are useless.

Jamie, yes, there is definitely more than one so the traps stay down.

Edge, I'm not sure if I'm humane or soft. Soft in the head maybe. :) He would do well to get back to our house because I let him out some distance away and he'd have to carry out a kamikaze mission across a busy main road to get to us.

Penny, I'm probably not better, just soft.

Zhoen, I like that story about the cats in China. A cat would be too much of a liability with our greyhound. He's already injured one cat and come close to getting his teeth into a few more. And I can't say I'm all that fond of cats (but then I'm not fond of mice either).

Bellarosa, I hope so too!

I dunno, I love mice, I think they're the bravest of God's creatures, full of elan and reckless dash. I could no more kill a mouse than a kitten.

I have trapped a good number and taken them far away, though.

Our most successful trap was a simple wooden box, about shoebox-size. Put in on a board, upside down. Tie one end of a thread to something up above, thread it under one lip of the box and tie it to the other lip, so the box sits with one end an inch or two off the board, and the thread runs the length of the box. Smear cheese or peanut butter on the thread, near the middle.

The nice thing about this trap is that a mouse is very happy to eat thread, even before it's soaked in cheese or peanut butter, so they eat right through it. (The problem with triggers that mice don't like to eat is that mice can be very clever, as you've discovered, at getting the bait off without springing the trap.) The thread snaps, the box drops, and there you are. Turn it over carefully and carry the mouse off to some nice mouse-friendly habitat.

(The box has to be pretty heavy and solid, though, or they'll eat right through it.)

I agree with your other commenters, there's not really any such thing as one mouse.

Dale, I know what you mean about mice - I can't bring myself to kill them. Thanks for the trap idea. And yes, there definitely is more than one.

Steve, thanks, that trap is a very good idea. I've bought a new trap now though so we'll have to see whether that will be more successful.
